The Real Weather in Cyprus

Introduction

Everybody knows Cyprus for one thing; the weather. In particular, as a sun-soaked destination where the sea is always warm and the weather is always sunny. However, that is not the reality, let me explain.

The weather / climate in Cyprus is an intense Mediterranean climate with long dry summers from mid–May to mid–October, and mild winters from December to February, and short autumn and spring seasons. In the last 3 years living in Cyprus the weather got worse as dust storms became more common, summers hotter and winters colder. It’s an effect of climate change that should be noted when moving to Cyprus.

Weather Patterns

Moreover, there’s some important patterns to seasons which are elaborated simply, below:

  • March – May – It’s warm, sunny but rainy at times
  • June – June – It’s getting a bit hot
  • End of June – Mid-August – Okay it’s too hot for me
  • End of August – October – It’s nice and I can go swimming without getting a heatstroke
  • November – February – A bit colder then cold and then warm again

Houses and Insulation

I will also add that because of the hot summers, most houses in Cyprus are NOT as insulated as for example UK homes which means during the winter, it can get quite cold inside which is the downside of having a house optimized for the sunny weather. To add, make sure you have air conditioners in the summer as being without one is a pain in the backside when it gets really hot. They are much better than fans which don’t do anything apart from moving your sweat left and right on your body.

Conclusion

All in all, Cyprus is not always an enjoyable sunny island but an island which does experience dust storms, rain and of course cold. So, don’t believe the fairy tales and if you’re coming as a tourist, make sure to come towards the end of August – early October and if you want to move to Cyprus for it’s tax benefits, climate or anything else, check out some of my other posts and of course, keep in mind that the weather is not perfect.
